JBL Charge 3 Review: A Full Breakdown of an Awesome Bluetooth Speaker

Worldwide, the Bluetooth speaker market was valued at 3.37 billion in 2017. That number is set to climb and reach 22.43 billion by 2023.

This exponential growth is fueled in part by consumers desire to have tech that is intuitive, portable and versatile. The competition in this market is intense, with audiovisual companies launching a multitude of products to attract consumers.

Read on for a full JBL Charge 3 review to discover if this is the portable Bluetooth speaker you need.

Design

The JBL Charge 3 weighs 1.8 pounds and has these dimensions: 9.1 x 3.4 x 3.5 inches. You get a whopping 6000mAH power bank with this speaker. This thing is big, that's for sure.

The shape is cylindrical with exposed bass radiators on both ends. That means that you'll see the vibration when the bass is blasting. These exposed woofers look cool but are delicate. Be careful not to let something sharp poke into one of these radiators.

On the top, you'll find the set of raised buttons that are common for JBL. These are the Bluetooth pairing, volume, and play/pause/skip.

The JBL Connect button is flush with the speaker. This button lets you connect to other JBL Connect speakers so you can spread your tunes wider.

Turn the speaker over and you'll find a small stand. Here there are 5 indicator lights that show you how the battery is doing.

The back of the JBL Charger 3 has the USB output, AUX input and micro USB input all tucked under a rubber flap.

JBL Charge 3 is Waterproof

There is a difference between products that are water-resistant and waterproof. A device's waterproofing depends on a rating system which goes from IPX0 to IPX8.

The JBL charge 3 has a rating of IPX7. This means that it is considered waterproof. This device can be submerged in water up to 3 feet deep without any problem.

If you drop it in a pool or lake though, you might be out of luck.

Battery Life

One of the most important considerations for all Bluetooth speakers is battery life.

The JBL charge 3 speaker gives you a total of 20 hours of runtime. Pretty impressive for a portable speaker.

You are able to charge your devices using this speaker. If you do use it to charge stuff, keep in mind that it will shave a couple hours off your battery life. Still, double-digit hours and the ability to charge your phone is pretty sweet.

JBL Charge 3 Controls

The controls on the JBL Charge 3 are simple to use. Play and pause your song, change the volume or skip to the next track all from the play button.

The only downside here is that you can't go back to the previous track. So if you accidentally skip the song you wanted, you're out of luck.

Versatility

Like previous Charge models, you can lay the Charge 3 flat or stand it up vertically. Some find sound quality isn't as good in vertical mode but it's nice to have the option.

The JBL charge 3 speaker is bigger and heavier than its predecessor so it will weigh down your backpack.

There's also a built-in mic that you can use to make calls on speakerphone. The quality is quite good and whoever is on the other line might not even be able to tell you're on speaker.

Sound

Here's the million dollar question everyone has about the JBL charge 3. How's the sound quality?

Because it's a big speaker, you'll enjoy a big sound. Inside, they can fill a space 50-60 feet wide. If you have walls separating the space, you might get 30 feet with a still strong connection and no skipping.

If you're outdoors, say lounging around the pool, you'll easily get a good 20 feet of decent sound.

The bass sounds best when the JBL charge 3 is placed flat on a surface. The speaker is designed to work vertically as well but some people find that affects the sound quality.

Some audiophiles may be disappointed with how crisp the high frequencies sound. Overall, the sound is great for a variety of genres.

On Amazon, JBL Charge 3 reviews give this device a 4.5-star rating.

Connectivity

One of the best things about the Charge 3 is that you can use it to charge your device. That's a convenient feature that is sure to come in handy.

The JBL Connect app lets you wirelessly connect to other JBL Connect speakers so that you can widen your soundstage. So if you want to fill your backyard with your favorite tunes, ask your friends to bring their speakers and enjoy a near concert experience.

Final Verdict on JBL Charge 3 Review

The JBL Charge 3 is a super improvement over its predecessor, the Charge 2. The Charge 3 offers you a perfect balance between great sound, sweet features, and affordable price.

The waterproofing is especially a welcome feature for peace of mind when you take your speaker on the go.

While it is large and heavy compared to other portable speakers, the sound quality makes up for it. With the Charge 3, you can turn it up loud and not be bothered by distortion.

We love the 5 color choices available for the Charge 3. Black is so overrated.
